The Museum of All Museums
The Louvre Abu Dhabi is one of the most significant cultural institutions to open anywhere in the world this century. Designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, the museum’s extraordinary perforated dome creates a rain of light. A shifting pattern of sunlight and shadow that transforms the experience of every gallery below it and gives the building a quality that changes with the time of day in a way that no photograph can fully prepare you for.
The collection charts human creativity across civilisations and millennia. From ancient Egyptian artefacts and medieval manuscripts to Van Gogh, Picasso, and works by leading contemporary Arab artists. It is, by design, a museum that tells a universal story. Not the story of one culture or one period but of human beings across time, across geography, and across the many different ways we have tried to make sense of the world and our place in it.
Most visitors to the Louvre Abu Dhabi walk through it and find it beautiful. Guests who walk through it with one of our specialist guides leave understanding what they have seen. That is a profound difference and it is the reason this tour exists.
The architecture
Jean Nouvel’s dome is composed of 7,850 unique star-shaped elements arranged across eight layers to create the rain of light effect. The museum sits at the edge of the Gulf on Saadiyat Island, surrounded by water on three sides, with galleries that open onto outdoor terraces and views across the sea. The building is as extraordinary as the collection it houses and our guides treat it as such.
The collection
Twelve permanent galleries move chronologically and thematically through human history. Ancient civilisations, world religions, trade and exchange, the age of encounters, modernity, and the present day. Key works from the Musée du Louvre in Paris sit alongside objects from civilisations that have rarely been displayed in conversation with one another. The result is a museum that is genuinely unlike any other.
The experience with a guide
The Louvre Abu Dhabi rewards those who slow down and engage. Our specialist guides are selected for their knowledge of the collection, their ability to connect works across periods and cultures, and their instinct for what will resonate most deeply with the particular guests they are with. Every tour is a conversation, not a lecture.
What Your Tour Includes
Private specialist guide
Your guide has deep specialist knowledge of the Louvre Abu Dhabi collection, including the historical and cultural context of key works, the curatorial philosophy behind the museum’s thematic structure, and the architectural vision of Jean Nouvel. They engage with your specific interests and adjust the tour accordingly.
A curated route through twelve galleries
The museum’s twelve permanent galleries are arranged to tell a coherent story across human history. Your guide navigates this sequence with purpose, ensuring that the most significant works and the most revealing cross-cultural connections receive the time and attention they deserve.
In-depth discussion of key works
Selected works are explored in genuine depth, with full historical, cultural, and artistic context. Your guide draws connections across civilisations and periods that illuminate the museum’s central thesis: that human creativity, across all its forms and all its ages, is a single connected story.
Temporary exhibitions
Where available, your guide will incorporate current temporary exhibitions into the programme. The Louvre Abu Dhabi’s temporary exhibitions are consistently among the finest in the region and frequently include works on loan from major international institutions.
Your pace, entirely
There is no group to keep up with, no fixed schedule to adhere to, and no reason to move on from a work before you are ready to. If something stops you, we stop. If you want to return to a gallery you have already visited, we return. The museum exists for your exploration.
Museum entry
Museum entry is included in the tour. There is nothing to arrange independently on arrival. Your guide meets you at the entrance and takes care of everything from that point forward.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the same as the Louvre in Paris?
The Louvre Abu Dhabi is a distinct museum with its own permanent collection and its own curatorial philosophy, operating under a partnership agreement with the Musée du Louvre in Paris. It is not a satellite or a replica. It is a world-class institution in its own right, with a collection and a building that are entirely its own. Guests who visit it expecting a smaller version of the Paris Louvre invariably leave having experienced something genuinely different and, in many respects, more cohesive in its ambition.
How long should I plan for the museum in total?
We recommend planning for a full afternoon. Two to three hours for the guided experience, followed by personal exploration time, a visit to the museum café, and time on the waterfront terrace, which has one of the finest views of the Gulf available from any public space in Abu Dhabi. The museum rewards those who do not rush it.
Is the tour suitable for guests with limited knowledge of art history?
Absolutely. Our guides are as skilled at introducing guests to art history as they are at deepening the understanding of those who are already well versed in it. The Louvre Abu Dhabi is designed to be accessible to all visitors and our guides reflect that philosophy in how they lead every tour. Prior knowledge is welcome but entirely unnecessary.
Can the tour be combined with other Saadiyat Island experiences?
Yes. The Louvre Abu Dhabi tour pairs beautifully with our broader Majestic Saadiyat programme, which also includes Manarat Al Saadiyat, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi site, and the island’s natural landscape. Many guests choose to spend a full day on Saadiyat combining the museum tour with a walk along the beach and a meal at one of the island’s restaurants. Contact us and we will design a programme around your interests and available time.
Do you offer transport to the museum from Abu Dhabi hotels?
Yes. We can arrange a private vehicle transfer from your hotel to the Louvre Abu Dhabi and back. Saadiyat Island is approximately 15 minutes from most Abu Dhabi city centre hotels. Let us know when you enquire and we will include the transfer in your programme.
