Middle East Travel Guide
Abu Dhabi is one of the world’s most rewarding travel destinations. A city of extraordinary contrasts where ancient culture and visionary modernity coexist with rare elegance. The following guide draws on the expertise of our team to answer the questions that matter most to discerning travellers.
When to Visit
The ideal season for visiting Abu Dhabi is October through April, when temperatures range from a comfortable 18°C to 30°C. The city is at its most vibrant during this period, with cultural events, outdoor festivals, and perfect conditions for walking and outdoor exploration.
Summer months from May through September bring intense heat, though the city’s world-class hotels, galleries, and indoor attractions remain fully operational year round. Guests who visit in summer will find the cultural institutions at their quietest and the luxury hotel landscape at its most generous with rates and availability.
October through April
The peak season. Temperatures are mild and pleasant, cultural programming is at its richest, and the city’s outdoor spaces are at their finest. Ramadan falls within this window in some years, which brings its own distinct and remarkable atmosphere to the city.
May through September
The summer season. Heat is intense outdoors, but the galleries, museums, and hotels are exceptional and uncrowded. Guests who prioritise cultural depth over outdoor exploration will find this an extremely rewarding time to visit.
Ramadan
Visiting Abu Dhabi during Ramadan offers a genuinely distinctive experience. The city takes on a different character after sunset, when the Iftar tables are set and the streets come alive. Guests are asked to observe public customs around eating and drinking during daylight hours.
Getting Here
Abu Dhabi International Airport is served by direct flights from over 120 destinations globally. Etihad Airways, the UAE’s national carrier based in Abu Dhabi, offers award-winning first and business class services from most major international hubs and is frequently the most elegant way to begin a visit to the capital.
Dubai International Airport, approximately 90 minutes from Abu Dhabi city centre by road, provides additional connectivity and is often the entry point for guests who wish to begin their UAE experience with a day or two in Dubai before travelling south. We offer private transfer services between both airports and Abu Dhabi city on request.
Where to Stay
Abu Dhabi’s luxury hotel landscape is exceptional. The following properties are those our guests most frequently choose, selected for their proximity to our tour starting points, their consistently high standards of service, and the quality of the experience they offer.
Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental
One of the world’s great palace hotels. A gilded landmark on the Abu Dhabi waterfront with extraordinary scale, service, and grounds. The closest thing the Gulf has to a royal experience for private guests.

Al Maryah Island’s flagship luxury address. Sleek, contemporary, and impeccably positioned for guests who want to be at the heart of the city’s financial and cultural life.
Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi

Cultural Etiquette
Abu Dhabi is a welcoming and cosmopolitan city, and international visitors are received with genuine warmth. Observing a small number of local customs ensures a respectful and fully enriching experience for both guests and their hosts.
Dress
Dress modestly in public areas, particularly at religious sites. Shoulders and knees should be covered when visiting mosques and cultural institutions. In hotels, resorts, and beach areas, standard resort dress is entirely appropriate.
Alcohol
Alcohol is served in licensed hotel venues and select restaurants but is not available in public spaces. Abu Dhabi’s hotels maintain exceptional bars and wine programmes and guests need not feel any limitation within their accommodation.
Photography
Photography of government buildings, military installations, and local individuals should be approached with discretion and, where individuals are concerned, with explicit consent. Your guide will advise at each location on what is appropriate.
During Ramadan
Eating, drinking, and smoking in public during daylight hours is not permitted during Ramadan. Hotels provide private spaces for guests who need to eat or drink during the day, and the atmosphere of the city after sunset during this period is genuinely extraordinary.
Public behaviour
Public displays of affection are best kept modest. Abu Dhabi is a tolerant and internationally minded city but local social customs around public conduct are worth observing as a mark of respect for the culture you are a guest within.
Getting Around
For luxury travellers, we recommend engaging a private driver for independent exploration between tour programmes. Abu Dhabi is a spread-out city and the experience of moving through it in a well-appointed private vehicle is both practical and pleasurable.
Uber and Careem operate reliably throughout the city and are a convenient option for shorter journeys. Metered taxis are plentiful and trustworthy. Our own tours include private vehicle transfers throughout, so guests on our programmes need not concern themselves with ground transport logistics at any point during the experience.
Currency and Payments
The UAE Dirham (AED) is the local currency, pegged to the US Dollar at approximately 3.67 AED. Credit cards are accepted almost universally in luxury venues, hotels, galleries, and restaurants. Cash is rarely necessary for a luxury travel itinerary, though it is useful to carry a modest amount for smaller purchases in markets and souks.
Visa Information
Citizens of over 50 countries, including the USA, UK, EU member states, Australia, and most Asian nations, receive visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to the UAE. We recommend checking the latest entry requirements with your country’s passport authority or the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs prior to travel, as entry requirements can change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Abu Dhabi safe for international travellers?
Abu Dhabi consistently ranks among the safest cities in the world for international visitors. Crime rates are exceptionally low, the infrastructure for tourism and hospitality is well established and highly professional, and the city’s approach to welcoming international guests is genuine and long-standing.
What languages are spoken?
Arabic is the official language of the UAE, though English is widely spoken in all hotels, restaurants, galleries, and tourist contexts throughout Abu Dhabi. Our guides conduct tours in English as standard, with French, German, and Mandarin available upon request.
How does Abu Dhabi differ from Dubai?
Abu Dhabi is the UAE’s capital and the seat of federal government, culture, and heritage. It is generally regarded as more reserved, more culturally substantive, and less commercially driven than Dubai. The pace is more considered, the architecture more varied in its ambitions, and the cultural institutions among the finest in the world. Many luxury travellers find this distinction deeply appealing and choose to spend their UAE visit in Abu Dhabi specifically for this reason.
